BACK TO THE
50’S SOCK HOP FUNDRAISER
Caminata Contra El Cancer
dances too!
On November 12, 2009,
we hosted a brand new event, our first “Back To The
50’s” Sock Hop to which about 150 people wearing
poodle skirts, saddle shoes, white T-shirts, loafers, blue
jeans and such came out to rock the night away. It was held
in the Ejido Salon Social and our decorating committee transformed
the hall into typical 50’s High School dance look.
Memorabilia from the era adorned the walls and tables….LP’s
of Mitch Miller tunes, popular TV stars and such was spread
about for folks to look at. We heard lots of “I remember
that show”, “that song” comments throughout
the evening.
Staying true to the
days of rock and roll, we had a Malt Shop, provided by Tony
of Chumpos fame; folks lined up for fabulous milk shakes
and malts all night long; one guest went back three times
for shakes! Of course, the best eats that go with a shake
is a big, fat juicy burger or hot dog and fries, catered
by Sr. Nacho, one of the best in San Felipe. Pedro, Baja’s
Best Bartender, donated his expertise at the watering station.
A brilliant night of
live music by the “Baja Boys” had everyone up
and jiving. Enthusiastic dancers participated in our twist
and jive dance contests held through the night; no doubt
there was some sore muscles for some the next day!
Raffles were drawn for
prizes donated from some of our continuous supporters, such
as Baja Nueva, Sea & Star Spa, The Sea of Cortez Salt
Company, to name a few. The final prizes of the evening
went to the most ‘authentic 50’s outfit”
for guys and gals. Our own Marcia Bandera, sporting a very
‘50’s’ Page Boy hairdo took the ladies
prize.
By all reports, the
evening was a huge success with the expectations of doing
it again in the fall of 2010. You won’t want to miss
the next one so look for our posters in the fall and plan
to be there or be square!!
Many, many thanks to
each and every wonderful volunteer for their efforts and
dedication in helping this event come together and make
it the success it was!! Also, our most grateful appreciation
goes to the Ejido Salon for donating the venue for our event.
As it is with our annual
Walk, all monies raised at this event go right back into
the Caminata and ultimately helps us to continue operating
the Center for Cancer Detection and Education here in San
Felipe. We thank everyone who came to participate in the
fun for their continued commitment and support of our efforts.
